Les Misérables (usually pron.: /leɪ ˌmɪzəˈrɑːb/; French pronunciation: ​[le mizeʁabl(ə)]) is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is widely considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century. The title can be variously translated from the French as The Miserable, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, or The Victims, but in the English-speaking world the novel is usually referred to by its original French title. Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, focusing on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption.^[1]

Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Misérables has been popularized through numerous stage adaptations, including a musical (1980–1985, 1985–2003, 2006–2008), its 2012 film version, and several other films.

행복한 캐릭터가 없다, 슬픔을 안고 하루하루를 보내는 인물들. 테마는 '자유' freedom. 아프고 춥고 상처받고 괴롭고 어려운 .. 시대적 배경도 인물들 각자의 삶들도 분명히 어두운 빛 없는 흙빛의 소설. 이러한 어두운 내용와중, '재미'를 의도한 것인지 제법 빠른 박자의 음악과 희극의 요소들을 많이 사용하였다. 균형을 위한 의도였는지 모르겠지만 부조화를 나았고 반감을 샀다. 차라리 마냥 보기 어려울 만큼의 괴로움을 그대로 표현했더라면 솔직했을 것을, 대중을 고려한 선택인지, 감독의 취향인지, 나에게는 실망. 

내용 전개의 속도는 영화의 특성상 제한되어있다지만 터무니 없이 짧았고 내용의 감성을 전달하기에 당연히 부족. 연출의 스케일도 생각만큼 크지 않았다. 화면 구도 자체도 좁은 인상을 남겼고, 숨 넘어가는 장면 한 장 없었다. 코스튬의 섬세함도 없었고, 찢어지는 감동도 없었다. 보는 내내 실망하여 눈물도 나지 않을 듯 싶었지만 끝에 다가가 눈물이 나기는하더라. 하지만 책에 비하 터무니 없는 감정의 깊이 .. 배우들의  숨의 박자, 표정, 움직임 - 연기력이 굉장했다는 것만은 단연 인정. 이 영화의 유일한 볼거리였다. 

14살 더운 여름 에어컨 시원히 돌아가는 시립 도서관 바닥에서 읽었던 Les Miserables - 그 아픈 감성을 기억하고 기대했는지 아쉬움이 컸다. 음악들 또한 각자 멋진 곡들이지만 내용에는 어울리지 않는다는 의견. 나의 레미제라블은 이게 아니었는데, 아쉽다.
