물의 맛

어이가 아리마셍, 한국에서도 여러 곳에서 해보았고, 미국에서도 몇 군데에서 경험한 헌혈 - 때로 철분이 부족하여 하지 못하기도 했지만, 총적으로 10번은 한 듯 하다. 오늘은 무난히 철분수치 12.8로 통과 - 사람도 많이 없는 아침시간 이여서 여유롭게 누웠는데 그때부터 문제 시작. 테크니션은 라디오의 노래를 따라부르며, 이 노래가 내가 태어나기도 전에 나왔던 노래라는 둥, 자기가 늙은 것 같다는 둥, 최근에 나온 영화가 있는데 보고싶다는 둥, 아 말이 많다. 물론 미국사람들 중 대다수가 이러한 '캐쥬얼'한 대화를 즐기지만, 정신을 어디에 두고있는 것인지, 집중하지 않은 모습이 싫다. 말하느라 나에게 주는 지시설명 또한 매우 불충분하다. 누우라하고, 고무인형을 쥐었다 놓았다라는 것 외에는 다른 지시도 없고, 자신이 무엇을 하는지 설명도 해주지 않았다. 고무인형은 처음에는 그냥 주더니, 나중에 기억이 났는지 위생장갑을 끼워주었다. 가장 큰 문제는 이제 바늘을 넣는 과정에서 일어난다. 혈관은 찔렀는데 바늘이 들어가지 않은 것 - 나는 나의 팔에서 그렇게 많은 양의 피가 그야말로 '뿜어나올' 수 있는지 몰랐다. 매 번 헌혈하러 가면 듣는 말이, 혈관이 찾기 매우쉬워 편리하다는 것, 그리고 헌혈 속도가 비교적 빠르다는 것. 나름 헌혈에 적합한 circulatory system을 가지고 있는 나로써는 헌혈은 전혀 어려운 일이 아니다. 그런데 이 테크니션, 나의 피를 침대와 나의 옷에 흥건히 뿜어버렸다. 자신의 6년 경력에 이런 일은 없었다며, 바늘을 휭설수설 끼우려는 동안 피는 계속 나왔고, 바늘이 들어가자, 바늘을 테이프로 고정하고 냅킨을 잔뜩 가져와 나의 팔과 주위를 닦기 시작하였다. 오늘 예외롭게도 무늬가 많은 옷을 입어 쟈켓은 많이 표가 나지 않았지만 셔츠가 엉망이 되었다. 레깅스 또한 검정색이였던 것이 다행. 얼추 팔을 닦더니, 헌혈이 끝나고, 바늘을 뽑고 닦아주겠다고 했다. 그리고는 보기 흉하니, 냅킨을 피 범벅이 된 나의 팔 위에 올려놓았다. 냅킨이 바닥에 떨어지자, 바닥에 떨어진 냅킨을 주워 다시 나의 팔 위에 올려놓았다. 냅킨은 바닥에 또 떨어졌고, 그녀는 다시 주워 나의 팔에 올렸다. 구멍이 나있는 나의 팔에 바닥에 떨어졌던 냅킨을 올리다니 - 불쾌했다. 헌혈을 금새 끝났고, 바늘을 뽑고 나의 팔을 알코올로 닦는 와중, 그녀는 나의 팔을 닦던 알코올 스와이프로 침대를 닦더니, 같은 스와이프로 다시 나의 팔을 닦곤했다 - 하아, 여자여 개념이 있는가. 물론 그녀는 사과와 함께 세탁비를 청구 할 수 있다며, 헌혈 때마다 주는 전화번호와 사후 조치가 적혀있는 종이를 건내었다. 주로 헌혈이 끝나면 운동에 관해, 음식섭취에 대해, 이런저런 이야기를 해주기 마련인데, 미안하다며 그녀는 아무런 설명도 해주지 않았다. 보다 어이없는 것은 나의 옆 침대의 학생은 헌혈이 끝나고 어지럽다며 구토를하였고, 다른 침대의 학생은 팔에 바늘이 꽂힌채로 팔을 굽힐 뻔했다. 도대체 이 사람들은 헌혈자들에게 올바른 설명을 해주지 않고 무엇을 하는 것인가? 이렇게 세부적이지 않고, 느슨히 진행되는 헌혈은 정말이지 처음이고 황당했다. 하아, 와중 서로 농담이나 하고있다니. . 물론 피를 뽑는 일이 어렵지 않고, 오랜 경험에 숙달되었다하지만, 헌혈자들을 대하는 그들의 자세는 분명 전문적이지 않았고 명확하지 않았다.
앞으로 헌혈자들을 위해서라도 이러한 분위기는 개선되어야 한다는 생각이 들었다. 옷은 세탁소에서 받아주지 않아 세탁비를 청구 할 수는 없을 것 같지만 상황에 대해 이야기해야 할 것 같아 전화를 걸었다. Puget Sound Blood Center 본사는 나의 전화를 담당부서로 연결해준다더니, 그 쪽에서 받은 것은 음성녹음함이였다. 어찌되었건 나의 코멘트를 전하고싶다는 짧은 메세지와 전화번호를 남겼다. 후에 지역별 Blood Donation Coordinator 에게 이메일을 작성하여 보냈다. 몇 시간 내에 답장이 왔고, 그 테크니션의 이름과 추가적인 모든 정보를 적어달라는 부탁이 왔다. 나의 글을 담당 supervisor에게 보내겠다하였고 오늘의 일에대해 미안하고, 정보에 대해 감사하다는 내용이였다.
너무나 큰 실망이였다, 자신의 일을 이 처럼 전문적 professional 하지 않고, 능숙타고 설렁설렁하는 자세를 보아하니 속이 상했다. 그 곳은 분명 그들의 직장이고 그들은 일을 수행하기 위해 있는 사람들이며, 물론 간단한 헌혈과정이라지만 그들에게는 책임이 있다. 그 학생이 팔에 바늘을 꽂은채 팔을 굽혔다고 생각하면 정말이지 끔찍하다. 나의 팔에서 피가 뿜어져 나오는 것을 본 나의 경험 또한 끔찍하다. 이러한 일들은 모두 사소한 부주의에서 일어나는 사고들이고, 충분히 예방 될 수 있으며 예방되어야한다. 테크니션들의 보다 성실한 자세와 올바른 교육을 바라는 바이다. 다시 답장을 보내야겠다, 휴. 태어나서 처음 컴플레인의 글을 썼는데, 횡설수설 사건을 나열하기 바쁜듯한 글이 되어버렸다. 나 또한 전문성이 결여된 것인가. . 음 -

My name is Yun young Hwang. I donated at Bellevue College today, and the experience was very very disappointing. I believe this is about my 5-7th time donating. I walked in the bus around 10am, there were not many people so the process was pretty quickly. I filed my questionaire, took my blood pressure, temperature, iron level, etc. I got on the bed, and the woman helping me was singing along the songs on the radio. She was making jokes about them and talking about how the types of music she listens to while she's working out, and some latest action movie she wanted to see. I'm fine with making small chat but she could have been more focused on the job she was doing. Usually I was given more through instructions throughout the process, but she was giving me very minimal instructions such as lay down, and squeeze the cushion. She even gave me the cushion without glove on, so I held it for a while and used it to squeeze. Then she later took the cushion and placed a glove over it. So now I had the gloved cushion - which I should have had in the first place. Also the biggest problem is when she was putting the needle in my vein. I don't know what she was doing. The blood was all over my shirt, inner shirt, tights, and the bed. I have not seen that much blood come out of my body. It took her several minutes to put the needle in my vein after the blood splashed out of me for about a minute before she placed napkins over it. Now there was blood all over my arm, bed, clothes, but the needle was in. She asked me if I was okay and if I was in pain. I wasn't in pain, so I agreed to continue the process of donating. She taped the needle, and got things running. She started to try and wipe the blood off my arm, but said she will do it when the needle is out. Then she placed a napkin over my arm while my blood was pumping out. The napking fell on the ground from my arm. She picked the napkin off the ground and placed it on my arm. It fell on the ground again and she picked it back up and placed it on my arm again, this was quite disturbing. Also, after I was done, the needle was out and she was wiping the blood off my arm with alcohol wipes. She would wipe my arm, and the bed, then my arm again with the same wipe. This was also disturbing because she would use the wipes on my arm after wiping the bed. She apologized as she cleaned me up. I had to take off my shirt because it had too much blood over it. She placed it in a bag. I wrapped my arm with the bandaid and just put my jacket on. My jacket also had blood on them, and it felt wet. So she and I tried to wipe as much blood off of it before I wore it. Then I also sat there several minutes wiping blood off my hands and arms. She said I can get my clothes cleaned at the dry cleaners and call the center to get reimbursement for the cost. I went to the dry cleaners, they wouldn't take my clothes because they said it was too much blood and they don't think it will come off. So I called the center, and then transferred me to some voice message where I left my number and message.
The entire experience was horrible. Another student behind my bed felt nauseated and was vomiting. Another student at another bed almost folded her elbow while the needle was in her vein ! The overall atmosphere in the bus was very casual with some people singing and chatting. I mean I have nothing against a good spirited atmosphere, but I feel the people there were not being very professional. They should have spent more time giving through instructions to assist donors as much as they can rather than making casual chat. Drawing blood is not the most difficult / complicated medical procedure. However, donors must be respected as much as they can be respected, and people need to take their jobs seriously. The person who drew my blood said she has done this for 6 years and never had this happen. I am sure she knows what she is doing because she has done it so many times. But she should still perform her job in a professional and through manner. I have donated blood several times on this bus as well as other places and I know the process could have been handeled in a much more professional manner.
Donating blood is something I take seriously because it is for a good cause. However, the medical professionals I met today were very disappointing. In fact, they did not seem very professional. I remember the name of the person who drew my blood and whom I am most disappointed with, but I am not sure if I am to report her name to you. However, I believe something needs to be done in the future for future donors.
