Gallaudet University 세계 유일 난청 청각 장애 학생들을 위한 대학교, 유학생의 유학권유

Washington D.C. 에 위치한 걀라우뎃 대학교를 방문하였다.

청각 장애에 대한 사회의, 구체적으로 한국의 인식은 다소 부정적이다. 일단 한국에서 장애 자체에 대한 인식은 부정적이다. 용어부터 살피자면 청각 장애, 라고 구분짓는 인구를 미국에서는 대문자 D 를 사용한 Deaf 라는 용어를 사용한다. 마치 American, Korean, Christopher 와 같은 고유명사인 것. 청각 장애라는 장애의 종류라는 개념보다, 하나의 독단적인 성격으로 구분되는 인상이다. 어려서부터 긍지에 대한, 자부심에 대한 교육은 중요시 여겨진다.

미국에서 장애에 대한 인식이 한국과 다른 것은 물론이지만, 세부적으로 Gallaudet University 의 인식과 개념은 한 번 더 다르다. 학교에서 모든 staff 들은 ASL (American Sign Language) 를 배워야하고 정기적으로 시험을 보고 통과해야한다. 중심 언어이니만큼 가장 중요한 것이다. 청각 장애를 비하하거나 그에 유사한 태도도 조심해야한다. 이 곳에서 만큼은 오히려 청인들이 소수이고 도움을 받아야하는 존재이다. 

Gallaudet University 는 Deaf 를 위한 세계에서 유일한 대학교이다. 유럽에도 세계 다른 어느 곳에도 Deaf 난청 청각 장애인을 위해 디자인 된 대학교는 없다.  물론 미국의 모든 대학교는, 청각 장애인 뿐 아닌 도움을 필요하는 학생이 입학 한 경우, 그 학생의 필요를 보조 할 수 있는 도움을 주기 마련이다. 하지만 Deaf 를 고려하여 프로그램 curriculum, 건물, staff, 등을 디자인 한 학교는 없다. 1864년 설립으로 역사도 제법 깊다.

학교 곳곳에 Video phone 이 설치되어있다. 음성만을 사용하는 전화기는 불편 및 불필요 함으로 비디오 전화기를 사용한다. 수화를 하지 못하는 사람과도 통화가 가능하도록 통역사에게도 연결이 가능하다. 

대표적인 비디오  전화기 제작사인 Sorenson 은 최근 Gallaudet University 캠퍼스에 건물도 지었다 (James Lee Sorenson). 건물은 듣는 것이 불편한 사람들을 위하여 섬세히 디자인되었다.

1. 건물 전체가 유리로 안과 밖의 사람들이 수화로 의사소통이 가능하다.

2. 청각 장애인들은 시각적으로 곡선을 선호함으로 건물 구조의 많은 부분이 각지지 않은 곡선이 많다. 이 밖에도 천정이 높은 등 시각적으로 편안한 부드러운 느낌의 실내구조가 인상적이다.

3. 둥그렇게 앉는 것이 수화로의 의사소통에 용이함으로 실내 대부분의 좌석들은 둥그렇게 디자인 되었다.

4. 수화는 눈으로의 의사소통임으로 걸으며 길을 보기보다는 서로를 바라보기 때문에 계단을 못 보는 사고를 예방하기 위해 계단들이 보다 눈에 띄게 디자인 되었다.

세계유일한 만큼 난청 커뮤니티에서는 선호되는 학교이다. 

학교의 위치는 수도인 Washington D.C. 라는 장점이 있다. 미국이라는 대표적인 나라의 수도이니만큼 사회적인 움직임이 분명히 느껴진다. 학교 자체는 관광지와 멀지 않지만 중심이지 않은 부근에 위치. Union Station 과 몇 군데의 대표적인 역에서 Gallaudet University 학교의 전용 셔틀버스 Shuttle bus 가 15 ~ 20 분에 한 대 씩 운행된다. 역까지는 D.C. 의 지하철이 제법 간단함으로 어려움 없이 도착 할 수 있고, 역에서  캠퍼스 내부까지 shuttle bus 가 운행되니 편리하다.

기이한 점이라면 기숙사에 학생 주방이 없단다. 아무래도 건물 구조상 어쩔 수 없었던 듯 싶다. 굳이 기숙사를 살지 않아도 되니 그만이지만.

동생은 현재 Gallaudet University 의 부속 고등학교인 MSSD (Model Secondary School for the Deaf) 에 진학 중이다. Gallaudet 은 부속된 초 중 고등학교가 있다. 

개인적으로 청각장애를 가진 동생을 둔 누나의 입장으로써 한국은 살 만한 곳이 되지 못하다. 물론 살 수야 있다. 하지만 참으로 싫다. 물론 참을만하다. 괜찮다. 하지만 미국에 비교하여 이 곳에 생활 할 수 있다면 이곳이 훨씬 편안한 것이 사실이다. 하지만 동생 본인은 한국에서 오래 생활하였음으로 아직까지는 한국이 편하다고 이야기한다. 물론 부모님이 한국에 계시니 돌아가야하나 하는 생각이 들기도한다. 하지만 현재 나의 마음은 동생이 Gallaudet University 에 진학했으면 하는 생각이다. 

물론 미국의 어느 대학교에든 진학해도 된다. 하지만 동생에게 Gallaudet University 에서 학부를 마치고 대학원을 가라고 권하고 싶다. 또한 유럽에 많은 학교들과 프로그램들이 있을 것이다. 학교 자체가 청각 장애를 위해 설계되지 않았다 하더라도 개인을 상당히 위하는 프로그램들이 분명 존재 할 것이다. 하지만 현재로써 미국이라는 나라가 나에게 그리고 동생에게 주어진 기회이기에 미국에 지내는 것이 그에게는 편리하다.

혹시나 한국에서 학부생 뿐 아니라 초 중 고 대학원 등 유학을 고려하는 청각 장애 학생이 있다면, 한국과 유학 사이의 갈등이라면 유학을 단연 추천하고 싶다. 유학이라는 생활 자체가 어려운 것이 사실이다. 나는 유학이 싫다. 유학생활은 어렵다. 물론 세계는 넓고 다른 곳을 경험 한다는 것은 굉장한 일이다. 미국이 더 좋다, 한국이 더 좋다, 흑백 규정 될 수 없는 문제이지만 한국보다 마음 편안히 생활 할 수 있는 곳은 많다는 것은 분명한 사실이다. 한국의 시스템은 1. 어렵다 그리고 그것보다 싫은 것은 2. 더럽다, 시스템도 대중의 인식도. 가족과 아끼는 이들과 거리적으로 멀어진다는 것이 가장 큰 불편함이지만 나는 동생의 유학을 참 잘 한 일이라고 생각한다.

나의 능력이 된다면, 나도 동생도 유럽으로 이동하는 방향을 고려하고 싶지만 당장 주어진 나의 학부생활에도 바둥대는 나이기에 .. 부족한 능력으로 미국에 만족한다. 아직 우리는 젋다, 는 것을 기억하며.
